Part Conditions and Grading Explained

What the different part types and condition grades mean on ShopEarl.

Every part on ShopEarl includes a condition type and, for used parts, a condition grade. Understanding these helps you choose the right part for your needs and budget.

Part types on ShopEarl:

  • Used OEM: Original manufacturer parts removed from another vehicle. These are the same parts that came with the vehicle from the factory. Used parts are expected to show signs of prior use — this is normal.
  • Remanufactured: Parts that have been disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and rebuilt to meet original specifications. Remanufactured parts often come with a warranty.
  • New Aftermarket: Brand-new parts made by a company other than the original vehicle manufacturer. These are designed to fit and function like the original part.
  • New Surplus: Brand-new, unused original manufacturer parts that are overstock or discontinued. These are genuine OEM parts that were never installed.
  • CAPA Certified: Aftermarket parts that have been independently tested and certified by the Certified Automotive Parts Association (CAPA) to meet original equipment quality standards.

Condition grades for used parts (A, B, C):

Used OEM parts on ShopEarl are graded on an A, B, C scale based on cosmetic condition:

  • A Grade — Excellent condition. The part has minimal cosmetic wear. Very few or no repairs would be needed. This is the best condition available for a used part.
  • B Grade — Good condition with minor wear. The part may have small scratches, minor dents, or light cosmetic damage. Small repairs may be needed.
  • C Grade — Functional condition with noticeable cosmetic damage. The part works as intended but has visible wear such as dents, scratches, or paint damage. Significant cosmetic repairs may be expected.

Important things to know about grading:

  • Grades describe cosmetic condition, not whether the part works. All parts listed on ShopEarl are expected to be functional.
  • Used parts are expected to show signs of prior use. This is normal — they were removed from another vehicle.
  • Photos on the listing show the actual part. Review them carefully before ordering.
