Restricted Parts Policy
Some parts on ShopEarl are classified as restricted and cannot be returned after shipment.
Certain parts on ShopEarl are classified as restricted due to safety concerns and regulatory requirements. These parts are subject to special rules around returns, shipping, and installation.
What parts are restricted?
Restricted parts include airbags, seat belts, batteries, and other safety-critical components that require special handling and regulatory compliance. Of these, the only restricted parts currently sold on ShopEarl are airbags and seat belts. If a part is restricted, this is noted on the listing page at the time of purchase.
Can I return a restricted part?
All sales of restricted parts are final. Because these parts are regulated as hazardous materials (HazMat), returning them through normal shipping channels is against federal law — so no returns or refunds are accepted after shipment. If you need to cancel an order for a restricted part, cancellations may be considered before the part has shipped — contact us as soon as possible.
However, if you believe the seller sent you the wrong restricted part (a part different from what was listed), contact the ShopEarl support team so we can investigate.
Why are these parts restricted?
Restricted parts are classified this way for several reasons:
- Safety: Many restricted parts contain explosive charges (such as airbags) or are critical to vehicle safety. They pose risks if mishandled or improperly installed.
- Regulatory compliance: Restricted parts are often classified as hazardous materials (HazMat) by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and require specific handling, packaging, labeling, and authorized carriers for shipping.
- Reliability concerns: Used restricted parts may be unreliable due to prior damage, improper repair, or degradation over time.
Important notes for buyers:
- Verify fitment before purchasing. Sellers provide vehicle information (year, make, model, trim) and VIN for the source vehicle. You are responsible for confirming the part fits your vehicle before buying.
- Professional installation required. Restricted parts must be installed by a qualified installer in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's specifications and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Improper installation can lead to serious injury or death.
- Check for recalls. Sellers are required to certify that restricted parts are not subject to recall at the time of sale, but you should verify this independently as well.
Seller requirements:
Sellers of restricted parts on ShopEarl must comply with DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations for shipping, maintain proper handling and storage practices, and follow recall procedures. Sellers may need ARA (Automotive Recyclers Association) Certified Auto Recycler certification.
